POTANIN GRIGORY NIKOLAYEVICH

POTANIN GRIGORY NIKOLAYEVICH (1835-1920), researcher of Central Asia and Siberia. I graduated from Omsk military school (1852)  Sh. Valikhanov's friend. In 1853-58 on military service in Semipalatinsk and Omsk. For participation in student's excitements it is sent to Siberia, in 1865-74 was in prison, then on penal servitude and in exile. Between 1863-99 I made a number of expeditions on the Lake Zaisan, Tarbagatay, to Mongolia, Tuva, China, Tibet, V. Hingan. By G. Potanin and his wi A.V. Potanina the valuable ethnographic material is collected. In 1913 G. Potanin visited Karkaralinsk, Koyandy (Botovsky) fair, natural boundary Burtas. Under the leadership of G. Potanin materials on culture, a life, folklore of the Kazakh people which laid down in a basis are collected to become. "On inflow of the river of Tokrau" (it is published in the Siberia Life newspaper, 1914, No. 82-84), are executed traveling water color drawings, photos. Collected materials are in ethnography Institute of N. Miklukho-Maklay's Academy of Sciences of the USSR, a herbarium — in funds of a museum of the Geographical society USSR. G. Potanin's works contain a valuable material on stories of the epos of the Turkic and Mongolian people. In Karkaralinsk on the building (nowadays the regional library, Lenin Avenue, 15) where G. Potanin stopped, is established a memorial board.
