After the school termination general worker of SU "Domenstroy" of Kazmetallurgbuild (1960); chugunshchik, forge blast furnace of the Karaganda Iron and Steel Works (KISW) (1960-64); student KARPTI (1964-65) ; dispatcher, gas-man, senior gas-man of the KMK domain shop (1965-69); manager of industrial and transport department of the Temirtau city town committee of party (1969); first secretary of the Temirtau city town committee of LKSMK (1969-71); second secretary of the Temirtau city town committee of party (1971-73); secretary of Communist Party committee of KMK (1973-77); secretary, second secretary of the Karaganda regional committee of party (1977-79); secretary of the Central Committee of Communist Party of Kazakhstan (1979-84); Chairman of the board Minister KAZSSR (March 1984 — July, 1989); the first secretary of the Central Committee of Communist Party of Kazakhstan (June 1989 — Aug. 1991); Chairman of the Supreme Council of KAZSSR (February – Apr. 1990). 24 Apr. 1990 at the 1st session of the Supreme Council of the 12th convocation it is elected President KAZSSR (it is uncontested, 88% of deputies of the Supreme Council pro voted).

1 Dec. It is elected the President of RK on national elections 1991 (it is uncontested, 88,23% of voters took part in elections, pro voted 98,78 %); I entered a position 10 Dec. 1991. Since 21 Aug. 1991 — the chairman of the board of safety, since May 7, 1992 — the Supreme Commander RK Armed forces. 29 Apr. 1995 on a referendum of power of the President were prolonged till 2000 (91,3% of voters took part in a referendum, pro voted 95,4 %). 8 Oct. 1998 according to RK Constitution the Parliament of RK decided to reduce the term of office of the President determined by a republican referendum April 29, 1995, to the introduction in a position of the President of RK, the electee on the presidential election appointed to January 10, 1999.

20 Oct. It was proposed by the presidential candidate of RK the Organization of veterans of RK, Democratic party of Kazakhstan, Party of national unity of Kazakhstan, Youth social movement "For the future of Kazakhstan", National and cooperative party of Kazakhstan, Republican political party of work and the Agrarian union of Kazakhstan 1998. On November 19, 1998 it is registered by RK Central Election Commission as the candidate.

On presidential election which has taken place on January 10, 1999 I received 5 846 817 votes (79,78 %), having won against three other candidates.

On January 15, 1999 it is registered by Central Election Commission as the President of RK. I entered a position on January 20, 1999. Member of CRC CPSU (1981-86), member of the Central Committee of CPSU (1986-91), member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of CPSU (1990-91), member of the Federation Council of the USSR (1990-91), member of the State Council of the USSR and Security council of the USSR (September-December, 1991). Since October, 1997 chairman of Interstate council of Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus and Tajikistan. Since May, 2001 chairman of the board of the Euroasian economic community. Deputy of the Supreme Council of the USSR of the 10-11th convocations, People's Deputy of the USSR (1989-91). Deputy of the Supreme Council of RK of the 10-12th convocations.
